NY Fashion Week

Monsieur Marc Jacobs

Marc J may live in Paris full time but his heart is still loving NY. After many a black runway reminding us of the doom and gloom it was great to be smacked in the face with an eighties memorabilia colour palette. Big shoulders, big jewels big sunglasses and big attitude sat on top of jade green pencil skirts, silver polka dot coats and shocking pink scarves. It’s also the comeback of suede purple over the knee boots- first on my shopping list.

the new New Romantic

A mixed bag of Flock of Seagulls hair and rich punk Siouxie Su make up was definitely the Benefit eye bright of NYC fashion week. Each of the models strutted down the catwalk with fountained spiky hair, back-combed and front-combed birds nests, fifteen cm quiffs and technicolour lips in laura palmer blue. The make up of Francois Nars worked as an electro-clash explosion to an already loud dress up box from mum’s wardrobe.

the old New Romantic

In the early eighties alongside new wave music came new romanticism. Androgynous hair and make up- or more like a chance for men to continue glam rocking minus the flaresuits. I love the dark moody cleopatra eyes mixed with the press down hard lipliner. Not an easy look to work first time around but the MJ girls Hanne, Maryna, Chanel, Raquel, Kim, Freja and Daiane came down that catwalk with the easy confidence of an original cast member from Dynasty.

backstage pass- chiara & waris

backstage

Filmmaker Chiara Clemente and her actor/jewellery maker boyfriend Waris Ahluwalia are naturals when it comes to NY Fashion Week. These two are snapped often and always look NYC cool and cosy. They met when he was shooting Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic. Clemente- the documentary filmmaker and Waris- who’s latest jewellery collection was seen in the windows of Colette in Paris for couture week are being sanpped as much as the editors. Backstage at NY FW its the artists not the socialites who are gaining flashlight attention.

I was all set to hate William Rast- the weekend hobby of Justin Timberlake. Nothing against JT- I went to his concert filled with fifteen year old girls fainting and loved every minute. I am also sick of singers and actors thinking they have so much style to give! It’s time to let the creative talents who have studied take back the catwalk- I don’t think Alexander Wang will be releasing a rock single anytime soon. That said I actually quite like the top halves of the W Rast- bad name- collection, the jeans aren’t really to my taste. The short sleeved gold studded shirt, the white fringed shirt, and the black double breasted jacket all fit perfectly in my Roman The Prophet look. I also have some spare hangers for a Rag & Bone leather trimmed blazer and denim yolk shirt dress.
